SUNWAY MFC crushes mighty LIMKOK to lift Dhivehi Cup 2006

The Dhivehi Cup 2006 futsal tournament has ended in the evening of 25th Wednesday with much excitement. The finalists Sunway MFC and Limkok fought a memorable battle to rout each other. As the goals were pounded with fire, the Malaysian FIFA referee blew the whistle at full time; the score was 1-1. At penalty, the wonder boy of Limkok, Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) could not save his team from the clutches of defeat at the hands of Sunway MFC.

The victorious Sunway MFC, armed with a keeper and striker borrowed from Desa Kiara boys, proved too tough to handle. The euphoria reached its climax for supporters from Sunway when the penalties ended with a 3-2 win for them. Even with a new keeper for penalties, just it was not the day for Limkok. They had to be satisfied with silver medal this time. As the Limkok team walked from the ground with tears in their eyes, Sunway MFC and its supporters were rolling on the ground having the time of their life.

Apart from the Dhivehi cup, gold medals and cash, the champion team received a trophy from the High Commission of Maldives in Malaysia and a challenge trophy from the National Olympic Committee of Maldives. With 10 goals in pocket, Tom of Limkok was awarded the top scorer, whereas Visham Rasheed of Desa Palma was judged the man of the tournament. All the effort of the bronze medalists, Desa Help, with their high expenses for the team, went in vain. Along with Limkok and Desa Help rest of the losing teams went with a broken heart and dismay in sorrow of losing the cup. Nevertheless all the teams went home with hope to come back next year to take the cup with them. The chief guests to give the prizes were the Deputy High Commissioner of Maldives Hon. Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed and Dr. Yoosuf Shan who is specializing in orthopaedic surgery here in Malaysia.

Dhivehi Cup 2006 organized by Dhivehi Ekuverin is regarded as the best tournament ever to be held so far in all the aspects, especially organizing and crowd. With its free drinks and other giveaways, the tournament has become an example for others to follow. “There has never been such a well organized and excellent tournament ever” says Mohamed Aseel, champion team striker and organizer of a futsal tournament from Sunway. All in all we can say that Dhivehi Cup 2006 is a huge success and we all are looking forward for the Dhivehi Cup 2007.
